However your running is going, if you’re marathon or triathlon (or whatever the competition!) training with a friend then just remember to focus on you. It’s so easy to think that you’re not keeping up with a particular person but just remember the only person you have to beat is yourself. The minute you take the focus away from yourself, it becomes negative and your energy is taken away from you which will definitely affect your performance. We know it’s hard when you’re running alongside somebody and all you want to do is go faster so here’s a few tricks on how to not let your mind wonder:

1) Pick a body part and focus – I know this might sound crazy  but think about your running technique, so if you know you have something to improve on, then choose to focus on that. For example when most people get tired, they don’t use their arms, so just think “arms arms arms arms” – or if your hips tend to drop think, “strong core”  – this will keep you away from thinking about somebody else.

2) Focus on breath – when you focus on breath, you actually focus on rhythm, you want to feel like clockwork – the moment when everything clicks together is the moment you are always at your best.

3) Set your intentions – before you start any session or race, remember why you are there and what you want to get out of it. When you set your intentions you’re already tuning in to what you want to achieve, no matter how small it might be. It will help get all of your muscles ready to the fact they know they’re about to work!

4) Always remember – they are thinking about you as much as you’re thinking about them 🙂 Everybody is always thinking about the same thing, it’s just habit, break it.
